Cutthroat 04:14
Never thought I'd be stranded in this friendly foreign land Honestly, I'd say that I don't mind a single bit These milliseconds bleed into months at a time Gotta take a minute to sacrifice to the stormy spring full moon Last night, I heard the wind howling my name I flew up high like a bird in your dreams If I fall down from the sky- Will you throw me back up to fly? Times will change, but no one knew Fate still has cruel cards to play I don't want to chance this game Is it foolish or is it brave? I'll hold this close and never let go So cut-throat, but we can't give up We're slowly drowning in a pool of innocent blood If people actually cared, that would be the cure Last night, I heard the wind howling my name I flew up high like a bird in your dreams If I fall down from the sky- Will you throw me back up to fly? Times will change, but no one knew Fate still has cruel cards to play I don't want to chance this game Is it foolish or is it brave? I'll hold this close and never let go So cut-throat, but we can't give up We're not meant to go on forever But must we all die young? How can we keep up faith when the world crumbles around us? We're not meant to be vampires Taking blood from life and earth The storm clouds are rumbling again If I fall down from the sky- Will you throw me back up to fly? Times will change, but no one knew Fate still has cruel cards to play I don't want to chance this game Is it foolish or is it brave? I'll hold this close and never let go So cut-throat, but we can't give up

Who do I think I am anymore? Sometimes I feel I can't tell what's real and it shakes me to my core The night is slowly driving me insane And as I sleep, false prophets weep back into my dreams again Yet it's in my control My heart keeps pounding like a battle drum Ten thousand echoes, nothing in between I can't play it safe, now I see I have to find out who I was Before I get sucked back into oblivion I have to run away from the sun - 'Cause there's no place in heaven for women like me Gotta start over all again Rediscover what role I play And see what lies on the other side of the black hole Now after this eclipse, what do I become? Tell me, tell me, why am I so emotionally numb? All I do is carry this ball and chain Still, I hesitate, and let forth all that pain Yet it's in my control My heart keeps pounding like a battle drum Ten thousand echoes, nothing in between I can't play it safe, now I see I have to find out who I was Before I get sucked back into oblivion I have to run away from the sun - 'Cause there's no place in heaven for women like me Gotta start over all again Rediscover what role I play And see what lies on the other side of the black hole Is there anyone out there? Take me by the hand Full moon is a 'rising Floating in the atmosphere Hold me in your arms again This darkness will take me away Bit by bit I have to find out who I was Before I get sucked back into oblivion I have to run away from the sun - 'Cause there's no place in heaven for women like me Gotta start over all again Rediscover what role I play And see what lies on the other side of the black hole

Whenever we fight on this battleground I know I’m better off without you But the bullets piercing skin Keep me from being happy within Origins of your heartbreak Trace back to your voice Though I never had a choice You can’t leave my memory Why’d I cut you off mid-attack When you’re way too close for comfort I refuse to remember a thing I already cut off my red string Origins of your heartbreak Trace back to your voice Though I never had a choice You can’t leave my memory This was all just too good to be true It was like a fairytale, loving you I don’t want to forget you forever Now I regret all these things we’ve done Origins of your heartbreak Trace back to your voice And we never had the choice You can't leave my memory

There they go Along with the train One by one For better or for worse We'll be tossed around And life rolls on Don't look below Why do you hesitate? Maybe this time we'll make it through Of all these things you said- Please let this be right… Raindrops melt me into the ground There's nothing left back home for me This wasn't worth a single tear I'm waltzing with familiar ghosts-- Purple skies fade back to the light-- Half of the year we spend in darkness Grow like wildflowers in winter Grow like wildflowers in winter This constant fear is changing me Maybe it's time to run away Only so much to give in turn Before these thorns cut me down Haven't seen the sky in ages There is no time to live There they go Along with the train One by one For better or for worse We'll be tossed around And life rolls on Don't look below Why do you hesitate? Maybe this time we'll make it through Of all these things you said- Please let this be right… Raindrops melt me into the ground There's nothing left back home for me This wasn't worth a single tear I'm waltzing with familiar ghosts-- Purple skies fade back to the light-- Half of the year we spend in darkness Grow like wildflowers in winter Grow like wildflowers in winter

Downfall 05:46
I'll cross mountains you can't tell me to climb I'll break free across all space and time All I need is coffee, sleep, and rock and roll Just bring on the night and wait for summertime You want to be my downfall You want to be my downfall Every time you bring me down, I'll take you under with me I've been finally set free I'm made of pyrite and steel This downfall will not be my last This downfall will not be my last This self-destruction is bound to occur I'll find it later down the road These memories are tinged with red You push me around and left me for dead Now this is where I draw the line Ain't that lovely, honey? Every time you bring me down, I'll take you under with me I've been finally set free I'm made of pyrite and steel This downfall will not be my last This downfall will not be my last Don't speak on my behalf My words belong to me and me alone Don't define me and tell me what I am You mocked my heroes and will do the same to me Your downfall will be your last Your downfall will be your last Every time you bring me down, I'll take you under with me I've been finally set free I'm made of pyrite and steel This downfall will not be my last This downfall will not be my last

about

“Waltzing with familiar ghosts” is an appropriate chorus for Gentry Blue’s third track on their sharply titled EP, Pyrite and Steel, because the band draws influence from well-known names in rock and roll: Janis Joplin, Rush, Pearl Jam, amongst others. But Gentry Blue dances through these muses with their own splash of style, complete with insistent guitar riffs from Travis Fairley, complimenting Lydia Gentry’s slicing electric violin. It’s something you don’t hear from many modern rock groups, the addition of this electrified classical instrument, but along with the slap of Jo Jeffries’ bass and Brendan “Debo” DeBonis’ steady drumbeat, it makes for an altogether sonic encapsulation of the word unique. Heard on tracks like the aggressive “Cutthroat” and the pondering “What Lies on the Other Side,” the band muses on existential questions and finds inspiration in the cosmos: Lydia’s tenor roars as she sings about black holes, the glittering stars in the sky, and the fires of hell throughout the songs. “Downfall” and “Origins (of Your Heartbreak),” along with “Familiar Ghosts,” take on these same themes, but they are laced with the yearning to understand and discover the nuances of relationships. Once you’re in the zone of Pyrite and Steel, it’s hard to escape the mesmerizing beats and creative intertwining of lyric and melody. When you hear it, though, you just know Gentry Blue is going somewhere: to the galactic stages of rock and roll infamy.
